"...hard-boiled, hands-on advice for how to mitigate the lasting effects of child abuse." – BlueIn Reviews
Did your childhood feel like something you survived instead of enjoyed?
Painful childhoods naturally results in many sticky obstacles to adult success, ranging from distrust in others to self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors. During prolonged periods of chronic family stress (intergenerational trauma), a young brain creates deeply ingrained physical and mental habits to survive childhood.
Unfortunately, these habits work against generational trauma survivors in adulthood and can even result in diagnoses like depression, bipolar, ADHD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). These perfectly normal reactions to childhood stress do not automatically go away when you grow up! Healing childhood trauma is challenging but possible.
This guidebook presents 20 key concepts in the form of rules (or guidelines) for comprehensively thriving past your stressful childhood. Each chapter explains the key concepts behind the rule before offering realistic trauma workbook exercises that show you how to apply the rule to your own life. Consistent application of these 20 rules will build your knowledge base and critical skills necessary for maximum personal thriving and happiness. Most trauma recovery workbooks focus on 4-5 of these issues in depth but leave out other important concepts!
Author Ernest Ellender, PhD has worked directly with childhood trauma survivors since 1995. He combined his clinical psychology doctorate with his martial arts career (black belt jiu-jitsu instructor) to create this comprehensive and effective book about healing from childhood trauma and protecting yourself and your family from further trauma.

Ernest Ellender
Ernest Ellender worked in the fields of psychology, life coaching, and martial arts for over 25 years before authoring his first book entitled “This Is How We Heal From Painful Childhoods”. His advanced martial arts training (BJJ black belt) combined with his doctorate in clinical psychology to produce an empowering skills-building curriculum which he delivered to local clients in south Louisiana.
The rich heritage of Louisiana's Cajun communities celebrates family life and a close connection to the land (hunting, fishing, farming, food), and includes a long history of cultural traumas that persist today. This offered fertile grounds for refining the healing-from-childhood curriculum before offering it to the world in his new book.
Nowadays, Ernest spends his leisure time enjoying the wonderful Cajun cuisine, marshlands, beaches, and local microbreweries of south Louisiana with his family and friends.
